The program analyzes audio in real time, automatically or in user-defined time bands. The sound signal is analyzed in thousands of frequency bands between 20Hz and 22000Hz, each band being individually adjustable in width, pulse width, gain, and level. Analysis is performed either with the mouse or the keyboard. Optionally RAS can be used to obtain estimates of the volume level at different frequencies via a sound envelope generator. Alternatively the user can select a reference tone (e.g. a pure tone) and the software will automatically filter all gain changes to that frequency. Rational Acoustics Smaart (RAS) is designed to analyze the audio spectrum in real time, either automatically or by user-defined time bands. The difference between recording and analyzing is that while recording, the amplitude of a specified region of interest is increased or decreased gradually while recording so that any changes in the signal, such as a change in loudness, can be seen more clearly. Unfortunately this process does not work well when analyzing audio while it is recorded. To study an audio signal while it was being recorded would require knowing what the exact relative amplitudes were at each of thousands of frequencies which would require months of research. In order to be able to move the frequency of analysis quickly while listening to the signal, a special type of filter called a correlator is used. A correlator can filter out all frequencies except for a single set of frequencies selected by the user. To accomplish this, RAS analyzes all of the possible frequency combinations while it is recording and stores them in a special file called a snapshot file. When analysis is played back using the snapshot file, any time membership can be applied, such as all bands from 40-160Hz or from 400-630Hz. Slide analysis allows analysis from one band to another without gaps between bands. Slide time can be automatically adjusted or manually entered by ear; i.e. you can listen to a band of frequencies and enter the range you wish the slide time to be. To allow for more complicated filtering, RAS provides a variety of "mixers" which are used during analysis. Mixers are types of filters which include one or more types of filters which are connected together by an optional connector path. For instance, two high-pass mixers connected together produce a bi-amping effect, similar to that created by an amplifier with two channels. RAS has an integrated mathematical model for each mixer type available in response to user requests. The models are based on the input signals being approximately realizable with no phase shifting.
